Be prepared for unique scenery, peaceful surroundings, stunning beaches, a great diversity of art and culture, picturesque nature and breathtaking views. One thing is for sure Tasmania will definitely steal your heart. Here are the 5 reasons why!

1. Get the best of culture and nature combined
With its numerous festivals and one of the world’s best art museums, MONA. This picturesque island and its endless national parks, has the best of both worlds combined!

The museum of old and modern art: Mona is a journey on its own.

2. Spot unique wildlife
Tasmania is the only place in the world where you can get a glimpse of the highly endangered Tasmanian devil. As your chance of spotting one in the wild will be about the same level of difficulty as winning the lottery. You might want to tighten the knot in one of the many wildlife sanctuaries on the island. Bonorong in Brighton is one of the biggest.

Changes are high you will bump into a curious Wallaby while hiking on Bruny Island, Tasmania.
Another special creature to keep your eyes out for is the platypus. An animal so special that it was thought to be fake when brought back to London for the first time in 1799.
Joining Ron on one of his tours in his hometown LaTrobe: The platypus capital of the world, will almost guarantee you of spotting one. Ron is not the least of wildlife guides in the world. His expertise on platypuses has brought him fame with many documentaries and collaborations with the BBC and the famous Sir David Attenborough. If that is not enough for you. 100% of the tours income will go towards the platypus fund. Tours can be booked via the local tourist information center in Latrobe.

A visit to Latrobe will be your best bet to spot platypuses!

3. Travel to the end of the world

At the end of the road C636 lays a hiking trail leading to the most Southern tip of Australia. After this, there’s nothing more than ocean until you reach Antarctica! You've literally traveled all the way to the end of the world! And those who visit the place may admit that it feels like it too. Between the end of May and September, definitely, keep your eyes out for any migrating whales passing by.

4. Travel for free
Get yourself a tent or a campervan and enjoy some of Australia’s most beautiful campsites for free! Tasmania has a great variety of campsites around the island. The local tourist information centers will be able to direct you to the nearest ones. Quality of the campsites varies from drop toilets to free kitchen facilities and showers. Regardless the level of luxury, most of them are located in absolutely jaw-dropping locations!

5. Get some real peace of mind
Zip open your tent and have a whole lake to yourself. Go on a multi-day hike without seeing anybody else. Drive for hours without passing any other traffic and breath in the fresh air. Tasmania is a dream coming true!

Breathtaking views like this are no exception in Tasmania!

Can´t wait to see Tasmania yourself? Check out the tips below to organize yourself the best trip:

How to get there:
  • Ferry: Spirit of Tasmania  has regular ferry crossings between Devonport (Tasmania) and Melbourne. Big plus: the ability to bring your own vehicle. Downside: the extensive travel time. It is recommended to take the night ferry to save yourself losing a day. Also, the ferry is quite costly in comparison to flying. Key is to book in time and keep an eye on any discounts and specials.
  • Airplane:
Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar offer single and return flights between Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart (capital of Tasmania) and Launceston (Tasmania). Tigerair flies between Melbourne and Hobart.
Check out google flights for your best deal. Note: Jetstar and Tigerair will most likely be your cheapest options, BUT as with most budget airlines factor this comes with a risk. Factor in that they charge fees for EVERYTHING and have extreme bad customer service. Delayed flights, canceled flights and even flights that get rescheduled an hour earlier without informing customers about it with no refund (trust me I have experienced it all first hand). My advice: pay the few bugs extra and go with Qantas and Virgin.

What itinerary is best for Tasmania?
There’s an endless list of things you can do in Tasmania. From the unique museum of modern art MONA in Hobart to the picturesque wineglass bay or the popular overland track crossing the whole island. I definitely recommend you to visit one of the many very helpful tourist offices. Here you can discuss your personal interests and they will provide you with a custom-made advice on what itinerary would work best for you.

A hike through cradle mountain national park is popular feature in most traveler's itineraries.

How to travel around?
  • Camper: For me personally, the only and best way to explore the island at its best. The amount of free campsites is endless. It enables you to drive to every national park and explore every corner of this little paradise at your own pace. Please note that when traveling around yourself you’ll need to obtain a national park pass when you want to visit any of the national parks. A pass can be purchased online, at one of the national park visitor centers or at most tourist information centers.
You can rent a campervan at Hertz. Excellent service and great choice of campervans for any type of traveler.

Car and tent/hostel/Airbnb
Very suitable for solo travelers or couples. Those considering bringing a tent, please be aware that the weather in Tasmania is always a surprise. One minute you could be enjoying the beautiful sunshine, the next you can be caught in a heavy storm. Take this into consideration when going camping.
Hostels and AirBnB are widely spread over the island and found in any price and comfort level.

Travelling by car allows you to explore endless beautiful routes.

Organised tour travel
Perfect for solo travelers and the easy cruisers. Best options for backpackers are Under Down Under, Jump Tours and Adventure Tours .

It's great to hear that Tasmania is the only place in the world where you can find really unique and rare animals. My brother is trying to plan a trip with his family for later this year. He wants to explore Tasmania and do fun activities so that they all make great memories together.
