It`s safe and easy to travel and therefore, to nobody`s surprise, a popular destination amongst globetrotters. However, with cheap destinations like Asia and South America getting more and more popular. Europe it is not considered being a very budget-friendly destination. BUT here`s the good news: with these tips and tricks you`ll be surprised how cheap you can travel from A to B.  Photo: Ralf Gervink 1. Carpool Carpooling is gaining ground within Europe. Have the comfort of a car and sometimes even door-to-door transport. Share the costs for fuel and tolls and off you go. BlaBlacar is the biggest platform to offer and find potential rides. Very convenient and secure. Pay with credit card only after your trip is completed and make new friends as you go.  Carpooling can be a great way to make friends and save money. Staying in a hostel? Don`t be shy to ask around where other people are heading to and if you can join. Also facebook groups like Backpacker Europe and Europe Backpacker/Traveler are great platforms to post ride requests, offer rides or find travel buddies. The downside of carpooling: One day you might be cruising with a business man in a luxurious Mercedes Benz and the next day you`re squeezing your butt and your backpack in an overloaded minivan that showed up 2 hours late. Be flexible and enjoy the surprises you encounter. It is all part of the adventure.  Finding new travelmates on facebook groups is a great way to share the cost of a rental car. 2. Bus There`s a big network of (international) buses within Europe. Eurolines and Flixbus are the two best-known companies. The buses can be quite old and also your seat might be a little overdate, but hè… single trips for as less as €5. Can`t expect 5-star transport for that. Also, check out their websites for multi-day passes options.  I found a bus ticket from Amsterdam to London for only €17! 3. Hitchhiking Fairly popular during the festival season in spring and summer. Great way to make new friends and meet open-minded people. Plus definitely, the cheapest way to get around. Be warned, hitchhiking is never 100% safe and in some countries even forbidden. Inform yourself well before putting your thumbs up on the side of the road. Book wisely, and you might even have a flight for free (excl. airport tax). Check out Google Flights or Skyscanner to see if you can find yourself a cheap deal. Who knows you`ll fly yourself from Amsterdam to Rome for as little as €20.  Flying can be cheaper than the bus or train AND is a lot faster! 5. Train The most popular way to travel around Europe is getting an Interrail Pass. You can buy passes for unlimited travel in one, two or all European countries. Great way to get transport costs out of the way at the start of your trip. Plus if you find yourself a sleeping compartment, you save yourself the cost of accommodation and time. Be warned: Interrail is not a hop-on-hop-off system. With most trains, you still have to book yourself a seat. Inform yourself well before heading off to the train station.
